About Dr. Panagakis
is a highly skilled and sought-after surgeon and clinician who has performed well over fifteen thousand surgeries in his first decade of practice. He is currently in his second decade of practice. Dr. Panagakis utilizes cutting-edge surgical techniques to give his patients the best possible results.
Dr. Panagakis served as Chief Resident in the Department of Ophthalmology at Wayne State University School of Medicine / The Detroit Medical Center, Sinai Hospital. He currently practices comprehensive ophthalmology with special interest in refractive cataract surgery, laser vision correction, strabismus surgery, and cosmetic/oculoplastic and reconstructive surgery of the eyelid and face. Dr. Panagakis is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology (board certified) and the recipient of the American Medical Association Physician's Recognition Award. Dr. Panagakis is one of the first and few ophthalmologists in the country who was residency trained in refractive surgery. He is also one of the first to perform LASIK surgery on a cornea transplant patient.
Born and raised in the Chicago metropolitan area, Dr. Panagakis graduated from Morgan Park Academy and left for Washington University in St. Louis for his bachelor's degree. He returned for a master's degree at the University of Illinois Graduate School and received his medical degree from Midwestern University's Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. He went on to do his internship at Cook County Hospital in the Department of Internal Medicine just prior to taking up residency training at Wayne State University. Dr. Panagakis also trained at the Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary Lancaster Course in Ophthalmology during his residency. He has received many honors and awards from these institutions.
Dr. Panagakis is a Clinical Assistant Professor, clinical faculty advisor and clerkship director for the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Urbana-Champaign. He is the recipient of the Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching at the College of Medicine, the School's highest teaching honor. This award celebrates Dr. Panagakis as "a faculty member who has provided distinguished teaching and who represents the highest of professional ideals". Dr. Panagakis is also a member of the faculty for the Carle Foundation Hospital Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Residency and Family Medicine Residency Programs, and he serves on the College of Medicine committee to select those deserving of the annual Clinical Faculty Recognition Awards which consist of the Teaching Excellence Award and the Innovation in Education Award. Dr. Panagakis has also published many articles in the field of medicine. In addition, he is fully trained and certified in the use of ophthalmic lasers for the treatment of general eye diseases and has additional experience in the use of special lasers in the following areas:
Certified in the use of the current VISX STAR Excimer Laser System, Chiron Automated Corneal Shaver, Hansatome, and Moria LSK and Carriazo-Barraquer microkeratomes. Trained in the use of the Alcon Summit Autonomous LADARVision.
Laser Skin Resurfacing
Certified in the use of the Coherent 5000C carbon dioxide laser and the Ultrapulsed and Ultrafine Erbium:YAG laser systems.
