Micro-Coaxial Phacoemulsification with 2.2mm Incision

Phacoemulsification is an advanced, minimally invasive form of cataract surgery that removes the cloudy, natural lens and replaces it through a single, tiny incision that is just 2.2mm long.  Unlike traditional cataract surgery, during phacoemulsification the natural lens is broken into tiny pieces (emulsified) and easily suctioned out of the small incision.  The replacement lens is inserted through the same incision and attached to the eye.

Dr. Panagakis performs micro-coaxial phacoemulsification with the Alcon Intrepid™ system that requires only a miniscule 2.2mm incision.  Using a 2.2mm incision reduces a patient’s risk of astigmatism after the procedure.  Because of the tiny incision size, no stitches are needed after this procedure and patients can enjoy immediate vision improvement after surgery.

AcrySof® IQ Intraocular Lens

AcrySof IQ Intraocular Lens | Urbana
As we age, the risk of developing cataracts, as well as vision disorder, significantly increases.  Many patients with cataracts also suffer from spherical aberrations, which are irregularities within the refractive surface of the eye that can cause blurriness, halos, double vision and poor night vision.

Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in the country and involves replacing the cloudy, natural lens with an artificial one.  There are several artificial replacements, known as intraocular lenses (IOLs), available to be used during cataract surgery, including the advanced AcrySof IQ IOL.

In addition to relieving the symptoms of cataracts, the Acrysof IQ lens also improves vision by correcting spherical aberrations that become more and more common as we age.  This lens offers patients enhanced clarity and an overall improved image quality.  The Acrysof IQ IOL also filters blue light for vibrant, natural colors that let patients see the world as they did, or even better than, when they were younger.

AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL

AcrySof IQ Toric IOL | Urbana
Until recently, patients with astigmatism were forced to rely upon glasses or contact lenses even after their cataract surgery, as the replacement IOL did not correct corneal astigmatism.  Now, patients can benefit from the AcrySof IQ Toric IOL, an advanced lens that simultaneously corrects pre-existing astigmatism of up to 3 diopters and replaces cloudy lenses caused by cataracts.

After implantation of the AcrySof IQ Toric lens, patients can enjoy a higher quality of life as they are able to drive, watch television, play sports and enjoy other activities without the hassle of glasses or contacts.  This lens is the only solution available to correct both cataract and astigmatism vision problems.  Like the other AcrySof IQ IOLs, the Toric lens blocks ultraviolet light and features blue-light filter technology to ensure brilliant, colorful vision after surgery.

AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® Multifocal IOL

AcrySof IQ ReSTOR Multifocal IOL | Urbana

The AcrySof IQ ReSTOR IOL is an advanced multifocal lens that effectively replaces cloudy lenses caused by cataracts and improves vision at all distances through one simple procedure.  While previous IOLs corrected vision as well, they would only correct distance vision, leaving patients to rely on glasses for vision changes caused by presbyopia.

Up to 76% of patients reported never needing glasses again after implantation of the ReSTOR IOL.  Those that did still need glasses usually have a much lower prescription and may only need assistance while reading or performing other up-close tasks.  This lens is implanted using the same safe, minimally invasive procedure as all other cataract surgeries but offers significant improvements to the patient’s quality of life as a result.
